Rapid Fire Responses: Ryan Lott of Son Lux

Meet Ryan Lott of Son Lux. He’s a musical multi-hyphenate sonic wizard, producer, and composer who is best known for his brainchild, post-rock trio Son Lux. (You probably know a certain song of theirs called “Easy.”) Lott was able to take a few minutes out of his day to answer seven rapid-fire questions from Output. Get to know his favorite tempo, emoji, DAW, and more.

Do you have a favorite tempo?

Depends on the meter, but in common time 73-93 BPM is the sweet spot for me, because it’s the right amount of time to feel each beat in my entire body.

What type of instrument is usually your starting point?

It’s cliche to say it, but the studio is my instrument. So usually I start from a sound itself and then look for a “home” for that sound. I’m a pianist, but I don’t normally pursue melody, harmony, or rhythm first, so I don’t often begin there.

What DAW do you work in?

Digital Performer! Even on stage. People think I’m nuts but it’s amazing and does some important things that Ableton Live cannot. Digital Production’s Chunks feature is absolutely essential to my workflow, and as I’ve gotten more into scoring films, it’s become only more valuable.

Do you prefer to work in isolation or a group?

There are benefits to both. Son Lux is now a band, both in the studio and on stage. I spend most of the time working solo, but collaboration has always been integral to my process.

What is your spirit animal?

My dog Leroy, who’s growling in his sleep next to me right now.

Tupac or Biggie?

Bee Eye Gee.

What is your favorite emoji?

Myself:
